Georgia Tech Basketball Leverages Analytics to Improve Team Performance
The CSA team is fortunate to have some of the most innovative coaches in the country just down the street in the Georgia Tech Men’s Basketball program. Coach Eric Reveno, a Stanford grad, was looking for technology that could support Dan Taylor, Player Development Coach, and the rest of the coaching staff. Coach Taylor is an innovator in the use of analytics to inform player development decisions to improve overall team performance.
Our team worked directly with Coach Taylor to understand available data sources and figure out how to integrate and synthesize the data to make it easier to understand, visualize and make decisions. We pulled raw data from wearables, surveys and academic sources into an online, customizable dashboard to provide comparative visualizations of the players’ game readiness.
In the first phase of the project, we focused on three main views of the data. First, we provided a way for the coaching staff to view a complete training summary of the team and individual players from wearables that track intensity, sprints, distance and duration. We also created a view into their overall wellness from self-reported data about their energy, mood, nutrition and recovery. Finally, the dashboard provides visibility into player readiness based on details about the players’ sleep, freshness, mindset and academic scores.
You can see how this dashboard looks and works by watching this training video
that Coach Taylor created for the coaching staff.
There’s no doubt that there’s a lot of data out there, but how much of it is actually being used to make smarter decisions? The CSA team has the expertise and experience to build visualization tools for coaches to easily view, understand and make use of this valuable data.
